Fire Alarms - Do you need to install one?
The following should help you decide if you require an Automatic Fire Detection and Alarm System:

Revised fire safety rules affecting all non-domestic premises in England and Wales came into force on 1 October 2006. If you are responsible for business premises as:
• Employers

• A Self-Employed people

• A Charity or Voluntary organisation

• Contractors

You are affected by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 which impacts: • Shops and Offices

• Warehouses and Factories

• Sleeping Accommodation such as hotells, guest houses and b&b's

• Residential Care Homes

• Educational Premises such as schools

• All Places of Assembly

• Cinemas and Theatres

• Outdoor Events

• Healthcare Concerns

• Transport Premises and Facilities
Automatic Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems are governed by a Code of Practice for design, installation and maintenance - BS5839 2002. This mandate comprehensively governs installed systems and if adopted correctly implies good practice is being followed.

A risk assessment is required to determine whether such a system is required which should take into consideration legislative requirements and give thought to:
1. Identification of potential hazards within the workplace

2. Recognition of who (employees, visitors etc) could be at risk from fire or the resultant evacuation from the premises

3. The potential risks arising from any hazards identified and consideration as to whether existing precautions are adequate or if more needs to be done

4. Documentation of all the findings and any actions agreed

5. Future reviews of the risk assessment process to ensure compliance
